Divination: Introduction to Pendulums

Updated: Mar 17, 2022

Pendulums are one of the easiest to use forms of divination. They can be constructed out of a crystal, piece of wood, or metal, suspended from a chain, or cord. Asking a simple Yes/No question.

What is a Pendulum?

A pendulum is a tool used for divination, dowsing, and clearing. It draws from your own personal intuition. It is constructed using a balanced weighted item like a crystal, wood, steel item suspended from a cord, string, or chain.

There is a full lineup of pre-made pendulums at a variety of online retailers like Friends and Gems Inc. or you can build your own using the tutorials you can find on YouTube and other how-to sites.

Purchasing Pendulums

Before shopping for your new pendulum, either online or in person, please take the time to ground yourself and to set your intentions for a new pendulum to be matched with your highest good.

Grounding

When you are ready, sit or stand comfortably with your feet planted firmly on the floor or ground. Picture roots going firmly into the floor or ground while a golden cord extends into the heavens from the head. Take a deep breath from your abdomen and fully exhale. Repeat your breaths twice more.

Selecting a Pendulum

Online Stores

Consider the following when choosing your pendulum if you are shopping online.

  • Size of the pendulum: How big is the pendulum? If you have small hands or weak wrists you might prefer a smaller pendulum.

  • Material of the pendulum: Will you select a pendulum with crystal, wood, or solid metal?

  • Design of the pendulum: What design are you going to select? For crystals: Are you choosing a Merkaba, Hexagonal Point, Facet Point, Bullet Point, Teardrop, Angel, Sphere, or Tree of Life? For Metal: Are you selecting a Coil Cage with Crystal Quartz, a Metal Spiral, Brass Teardrop, or some other design?

  • Chain Type: Did you want the standard chain or a fancier chain with chakra beads or maybe an OM decoration with the chakra beads?

Please note, these are just some of the options available.

Tips for selecting your pendulum online.

  1. View each pendulum that catches your eye. Carefully review the properties the seller indicates the pendulum provides.

  2. Check the dimensions carefully. This includes the weight to determine if this will be too heavy for you if you have wrist issues.

  3. If the pendulum still meets your needs and interests, check in with your intuition to determine whether or not this is the right pendulum for you.

Brick & Mortar Stores

This is is by and far, the preferred method for purchasing pendulums as it gives you the ability to actually see the pendulums up-close and to test each one.

Tips for selecting your pendulum in the store begin with ensuring you are properly grounded.

  1. Browse the rack of pendulums until your eye catches the pendulum(s) that sparks your interest.

  2. Remove the pendulum from the rack and hold it in your non-dominant hand.

  3. Feel the weight and allow it to swing freely to get used to the weight and the feel of the pendulum.

  4. Note how it feels asking any questions. Note what you like about it. Ensure you note anything you do not like about it.

If the pendulum does not feel right to you select a different pendulum and try the process again. If the pendulum feels good then move on to the next steps.

Calibrating a Pendulum

  1. Pendulum, Show me a "No".

  2. Watch for the direction the pendulum moves.

  3. Pendulum, Stop.

  4. Pendulum, show me a "Yes".

  5. Watch for the direction the pendulum moves.

  6. Pendulum, Stop.

  7. Pendulum, Ask a Yes/No question you know the answer to and the answer is YES. Watch for the reply. Ensure the pendulum response is correct.

  8. Pendulum. Stop.

  9. Pendulum, Ask a Yes/No question you know the answer to and the answer is NO. Watch for the reply. Ensure the pendulum response is correct.

  10. Pendulum. Stop.

The pendulum is now calibrated and you can ask your own Yes/No question.

A pendulum that does not provide much movement in response to your questions, may not be the best option for you even if you are attracted to it. Ask the owner if there is another one that looks the same. They might have one!

Working with your New Pendulum

Congratulations on purchasing a new pendulum! If you bought a prefabricated pendulum from a store or online retailer, it is a good practice to clear the energy from it and to make it your very own before the first use.

There are various ways of doing this from clearing with sound energy, smudge, placing it overnight in salt or water, or leaving it overnight outside in the moonlight. It is important to note, however, that some crystals and metals are degraded or damaged by salt or water so it is very important to check with the retailer to ensure you do not cause damage to the pendulum before selecting your chosen method of cleansing.

Once you have cleansed your pendulum, you will need to complete the same process you used at the store for Calibrating a Pendulum before you can start asking questions.

Divining

Some use the pendulum as a tool for divining, similar to dowsing rods, to point out the direction of lost items. The recommendation of Author Cassandra Eason is to use a map in conjunction with the pendulum to discover or locate the item in question.

Remember, the pendulum relies on the connection with your intuition, your guidance, and your ability to connect with the universe and the Divine!

Ley Lines

Some people hold the belief that pendulums can be used to locate magical sites known as lay lines. It is believed this is a powerful place to hold rituals in these locations.

Tarot and Oracle Card Readings

Pendulums can be used in conjunction with Tarot and Oracle card readings to try to bring clarity to readings for you and for others.
